Charlotte of Monaco has been my favorite royal for years. There is something about her undone look that is so alluring to me. Now that she’s in these Gucci ads she’s become something more: my eyebrow idol. I love how they are thick, natural and frame her eyes so well. Those French girls really know how to have that  je ne sais quoi beauty without ever trying.

Ole! Flamenca Lips.

My quest for the perfect pink lip lacquer is temporarily being put on hold. I’m attending the flamenco festival tonight in NYC and I feel the perfect red lip accompanies the duende (spirit of the art of flamenco) as the most inspired accessory. Tonight I’ll be sporting a deep, saturated formula that is influenced by the colors of the corrida (bull fight) and roses for La Virgin. Since true red is a glamorous gal’s staple some of my favorite makeup brands have just the right shade and stay-put technology. And, perhaps more importantly, all of them are aptly called Flamenco.

My Favorite Concealer

I went makeup shopping today. I rarely go makeup shopping. Which I know, may sound weird as someone who gains half of her yearly income writing about makeup, but I usually don’t shop for it, because I’m often testing it out. (The same holds true for buying air tickets. You’d think I’d never been on a plane before if you had to watch me navigate kayak.com.) I picked up some mascara that has been touted as simple amazing by my big beauty sister, and also grabbed a cheapie tinted moisturizer to even out some unusual for me redness on my cheeks. I love, love, love tinted moisturizer. I want to marry tinted moisturizer. But this post isn’t about that, it is about my other makeup boyfriend—Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer.
I snagged this creamy stick of goodness off of the tester table in the office. It was going to be used in a web story on makeup. But it never made it. The tube of just-the-right amount of color and texture sat in my pile of testers until one day, faced with the fact that I was totally out of my beloved YSL tinted moisturizer, I dug out the concealer by Cle de Peau to see just exactly what it could do. Smooth over, camoflauge and blend with the ease of the first screen of Angry Birds is what this diamond did for me. The formula is heavy enough to clear up even the darkest under-eye area  and light enough to wear on the cheeks. I also dab it in the corners of my eyes to look a little brighter. And I’ve been known to use it as a primer for any pale shadow I place on lids. I’m so happy I finally took the chance on this. Next up, a long-last super vibrant pink lipstick, which I’ve been coveting for a while, but afraid to take the plunge.

Year of the Dragon

To quote my Pilates buddy: “It’s a baller year.” Apparently, those who are born in the year of the dragon are considered the most likely to succeed. Since I’m a rabbit, there is not so much hope for me to rule the world. But there’s still a change some of the year’s luck can rub off on me. To make sure we all get a little bit of luck (gosh, I’m sorry for sounding like those NYC lottery commercials), Lush announced the limited edition Red Dragon Soap . It’s got a blend of patchouli, lavender—one of my favorites!—and pine in a shimmery bar. The soap is on the team! (Translation: Vegan)  And it can be layered with the company’s other Karma-scented products.

To say that I’m excited about the news that Benefit is launching a foundation like is like saying the Patriots are the best football team ever and Downton Abbey should be on streaming 24-7. If beauty brands were people, this would be my Mindy Kalling—cool, cute, funny, fun and smart and the ultimate want-to-be friends-with type person. I’ve had nothing but awesome experiences with Benefit’s products.  (I wore all Benefit for my wedding!! and BadGal Blue is genuis) and I just know I’ll want to marry this light-weight foundation as well.

What the Dickens!

StrangeBeautiful, the superbly saturated nail lacquer company, has recently packaged 10—yes that’s right diez!—black polishes into what has been called a Dickensian set. Available at Treasure & Bond, the volume (as it is being referred to formally) takes its color inspiration from the gritty novels of good old Charles and the tales of the brothers Grimm. I like the idea of layering the silvery blacks for a less “please sir, can I have some more” effect.

The Ace Hotel Nail Kit

Look at what we have here a trifecta of Surfer Rosa loves—travel, beauty and interior design. I mean it must be reyes. How else can we explain the pressie of all things I get excited for? The Ace Hotel teamed up with Uslu Airlines to release this industrial gray polish that’s being sold along with some nail primping tools. Statements on the color say it reflects the design of the NYC hotel. Having only been to the public spaces, I can’t confirm or deny, but I will say that I love the Breslin—and I don’t even eat meat! But none of that matters really, because what this is, my friends, is the best looking non-black neutral polish I’ve seen in a while. And golly knows, I can always use another emery board. The kit is available at the hotel’s online shop.

Natura Bisse Facial: A Review

The amount of times I go above 34th Street each year hover around the lowest prime number. When I do all the way up there to Midtown, fun-ish things happen to me. Just before Halloween I had a nice interaction with VP Biden’s Secret Service detail and a few years ago I think I saw Meg Ryan. (OK that isn’t that exciting, but you get the point.) I also forget-until-that-I-see-them-again, but I actually get excited by the holiday windows at the major department stores up there. So, I was pretty stoked to try out an Oxygen Facial from Catalan brand Natura Bisse. I honestly didn’t know what to expect (I’ve never received a facial at a store) and at most I thought I’d get a bit of a skin consultation while sitting in an oversize director’s chair under some bright department store lights. I also assumed I’d get a bit of product rubbed in circles around my face. And that’s when your mom chimes in with the “you know what happens when you assume…” Because my experience was hands-down the best facial I’ve ever had. After meeting Soshanna, she ushered me into a candle-lit treatment room that smelled of beauty. Then she did a little skin inspection, pointed out my fine lines and applied a glycolic peel that’s available at the counter.

Yowza. Did that bad boy work. I felt it tingle and tingle and tingle some more, while Soshanna gave me a hydrating hand massage. After we got that peel off my face, she applied serums, moisturizers and masques. Most were from the Oxygen line, but some were from the dazzling Diamond collection. And yeah, I sparkled. No, seriously, I’m thinking of ditching the day spas and making Bergdorf’s my go-to facial place. My skin never looked so clear and my fine lines essentially disappeared. My shoulders also got in on the action. While the products were penetrating my skin, I got an awesome mini massage. I also left with a load of creams, but skipped the ultra exfoliator.

The Nature Bisse facials are also available at Isle de France, an awesome resort on Saint Barth.
